Biological invasions by non-indigenous ants are widely regarded as one of the main threats to humanosphere sustainability. Recent discoveries of red imported fire ants on Japanese soil have raised significant concerns among local citizens, although there have been no reports yet of field populations found in the country. In response to these concerns, the Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH) has been appointed by Kyoto University to organize an international conference, the Invasive Ant Conference 2018, to take place Tuesday 23 January on the University's Uji Campus.

The Conference will feature eight speakers -- two from Japan and six from abroad -- to share their recent research and experiences on various invasive ant species, including the red imported fire ant, yellow crazy ant, Argentine ant, and Asian needle ant, and discuss the big-picture ecology and control of each variety.

The one-day event aims to serve as an immediate forum for scientists, pest-control professionals, and the general public to interact with the invited experts, so as to gain a wider understanding of the topic.

The Invasive Ant Conference contributes to RISH’s Mission 5, which is to realize a high-quality humanosphere for future generations through efforts emphasizing social connections and internationalization, as well as to the Institute's commitment to playing a leading role in solving emerging humanosphere issues, including biological invasions.
