Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences holds opening ceremony and commemorative symposium (21 December 2016)

On 21 December 2016, the new Institute for Frontier Life and Medical Sciences (IFLMS) commemorated its establishment with a ceremony and symposium at Yamaguchi Hall of Shiran Kaikan.

The ceremony started with opening addresses by IFLSM director Yuji Hiraki, and Kyoto University President Juichi Yamagiwa, followed by congratulatory remarks from: Mr Norifumi Ushio, Scientific Research Institutes Division director at the science ministry MEXT; and Dr Yoshiharu Matsuura, chairman of the Council for Research Institutes and Centers of Japanese National Universities, and director of the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University.

At the ensuing symposium, three commemorative lectures were delivered: "Exploring how universities' research institutes will be, and should be" by Professor Akihiro Asonuma of the Graduate School of Education and Human Development, Nagoya University; "Development and application of forward genetics gene screening by CRISPR-Cas9 System" by Dr Kosuke Yusa, group leader at the Welcome Trust Sanger Institute; and "How can mathematical sciences contribute to the progress of life sciences?" by Professor Yoh Iwasa of the Graduate School of Science, Kyushu University.

After the symposium, a congratulatory reception began with a toast from Dr Nagahiro Minato, KU executive vice-president for research, planning, and hospital administration. Congratulatory addresses followed, delivered by: Dean Shinji Uemoto of the Graduate School of Medicine; Director Tohru Mizuuchi of the Institute of Advanced Energy; and previous directors of the Institute for Virus Research and the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences. Closing remarks by IFLMS Deputy Director Yoshio Koyanagi wrapped up the day of commemoration on a high note.
