Associate Professor -  the Center's Department of Curriculum Development and Promotion for General Education


Kyoto University’s Center for the Promotion of Excellence in Higher Education is inviting applications for two nontenured Associate Professorships in English education. The successful candidates are expected to be distinguished researcher-teachers with qualifications and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate courses in English for General Academic Purposes; they are also expected to teach those graduate students who aspire to be TEFL specialists at the university level, provided that an appropriate situation prevails.
This Center has a special mission at Kyoto University in that its function is to offer advice and support to the development, implementation, and promotion of the language curriculum for general education (liberal arts education) intended for the University’s first- and second-year undergraduates. For this reason, the successful candidates are also expected sooner or later to commit themselves to administrative management of the English Language Program in collaboration with those teachers teaching English.

1. Positions: two Associate Professorships with a term of ten years.

2. Department: the Center’s Department of Curriculum Development and Promotion for General Education (liberal arts education).

3. Research area: Applicants’ research interests must lie in TEFL (TESL), English linguistics, or related areas conducive to TEFL (TESL) .

4. Duties: The successful candidates are required to teach at least five undergraduate courses in English for General Academic Purposes per semester and perform other duties as required. Additional duties may arise with respect to a graduate school.

5. Other requirements:
(1) Applicants must have a doctor’s degree or an equivalent record of academic distinction in published research in the area specified above.
(2) Applicants must have an experience with teaching English at a university or a comparable institute.

6. Appointment date:
1 April 2008 (by the beginning of the autumn semester 2008 by latest)

7. Application materials must include five copies of:
(1) Full Curriculum Vitae with education and employment dates specified to the extent possible, along with an e-mail address and information on affiliation with academic societies.
(2) Full list of research publications (technical books and papers) and another list of educational publications (textbooks, articles intended for enlightenment, websites for language learning, and the like).
(3) Reprints or photocopies of five major publications. The successful candidates will be requested to submit all their research and educational publications to the Search and Selection Committee.
(4) Summary of a TEFL experience at a university or a comparable institute and the contribution made to the improvement of education there, followed by a statement describing how you can, or wish to, contribute to the education at Kyoto University (approximately two pages).

(3) Please write “The Second Dept Dossier” on the parcel.
(4) The application materials received will be returned to the applicants at the Center’s
expenses.
(5) They will not be used for purposes other than search and selection.

9. Process and schedule:
(1) Interviews will be held for short-listed candidates in late October or early November 2007; they will be held in Kyoto, regrettably with no reimbursement available for the traveling expenses incurred.
(2) The final decision will be made at the Center’s Board of Councilors.
(3) The process will take at least four months after the application closing date.
(4) The result will be communicated to the applicants after the whole process is completed.
