Kyoto University Pioneering Research Unit for Next Generation invites applications for full-time appointments at the Assistant Professor level as a Program-Specific Fixed-Term Faculty member in either optical sciences & engineering, or sustainability sciences. Kyoto University Pioneering Research Unit for Next Generation is in part supported by a five-year Special Coordination Fund for Promoting Science and Technology (July 2006 to March 2011) from the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

2.Research Fields:
The Research Unit seeks outstanding young scientists with the potential to develop an independent research program in the research fields of optical sciences & engineering, or sustainability sciences. A startup fund and annual research funds will be provided to successful applicants. Research equipment and facilities will be available, upon approval, from the supporting Faculties of the Research Unit.

3. Conditions of application and employment:
1) Requirements for applicants: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree.
2) Nature of employment: Assistant Professor in Kyoto University Pioneering Research Unit for Next Generation(Program-Specific Fixed-Term appointment)
3) Term of the appointment: The appointment will be renewed every year up to March 31, 2011 according to the rules of employment in Kyoto University. Note that the first year is up to March 31, 2007, which is the end of the Japanese academic year for 2006.
4) Employment terms: Each will be recommended or promoted to a tenured/regular Associate Professor's position in a relevant department/institute at Kyoto University based on the excellence of results at an interim assessment towards the end of the 3rd year, and a final assessment within the 5th year.
5) Salary: Salary will be paid monthly in accordance with the rules of Kyoto University.
6) Insurances: National Public Servant Mutual Aid Association and Unemployment Insurance(compulsory).
4. The starting date of employment: November 1, 2006 (negotiable)
