AEARU:The Association of East Asian Research Universities

AEARU

The Association of East Asian Research Universities(AEARU)is an organization composed of seventeen leading research-oriented universities of the East Asian Region. The member universities are united not only by regional and cultural factors, but also through shared educational and research objectives. Member universities are involved in student and researcher exchange programs, joint projects, seminars and workshops on subjects of mutual concern.

Kyoto University was invited to join AEARU following the organization's 2nd Annual General Meeting in 1996 and became a member the following year. There are six other Japanese universities in AEARU: Osaka University, Tohoku University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Tokyo and the University of Tsukuba.

Kyoto University is serving as the chair university and secretariat of AEARU for 2007/2008.

Activities

1. Workshops

  • Molecular Biology & Biotechnology Workshop
  • Web Technology & Computer Science Workshop
  • Network Education Workshop (and others)

2. Student Summer Camps

Two different kinds of camp, general and topical, are organized for students every summer. Each lasts for approximately one week and activities are conducted with English as the common language. A general summer camp usually consists of programs such as historical site visits, talent shows, dance party, and laboratory experiences whereas a topical summer camp invites students to a conference or seminar with a specific theme/topic related to an area of science and technology.

Kyoto University usually sends two students to each camp every year. The participants are selected by the university's Committee for International Academic Exchange.

  • The 2007 general camp was held at Taiwan University from August 19th~25th.
