World Premier International Research Center Initiative

Kyoto University's Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences proposal is one of five proposals that have been adopted for inclusion in the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's (MEXT) World Premier International Research Center (WPI) Initiative.

The WPI Initiative was established by MEXT in 2007 based on the 3rd Science and Technology Basic Plan (issued by the Cabinet in 2006) and the Comprehensive Strategy for Creating Innovation (issued by the Council for Science and Technology Policy in 2006).

The initiative provides priority support for projects aimed at creating world-class research centers of the highest standard, staffed by leading researchers. Through encouraging autonomous initiatives such as system reform, the WPI Initiative aims to raise research standards, provide a superior research environment and globally acclaimed research centers which will attract the world's most outstanding researchers.
