President Matsumoto Attends AEARU 26th Board of Directors Meeting at Osaka University

The 26th Board of Directors Meeting of the Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) was held at Osaka University. AEARU comprises 17 leading research universities in the East Asian region (China, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and Japan). Kyoto University president, Dr. Hiroshi Matsumoto was chairperson of the association until December 2009, when the two-year post was assumed by the current chairperson, President Tony F. Chan of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The meeting was attended by the presidents or other senior staff members of the following universities: Kyoto University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Osaka University, Peking University, Seoul National University and Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu. In addition to President Matsumoto, the Kyoto University delegation included Vice-President Hidetoshi Kotera (Director of the President's Office), Vice-President Junichi Mori (Director-General of the Organization for the Promotion of International Relations), and several administrative staff members.

The meeting included a review of AEARU’s past activities and currently planned activities, and discussion of many other matters vital to the operations of the association. Among the topics discussed was the forthcoming 9th AEARU Web Technology and Computer Science Workshop: Cloud Computing and the Search for Knowledge, which will be held by Kyoto University on January 17–18, 2011. The supervising professor of the workshop, Prof. Katsumi Tanaka of Kyoto University's Graduate School of Informatics attended the meeting and gave the participants a detailed overview of the workshop.

The next scheduled AEARU meeting is the 16th Annual General Meeting and 27th Board of Directors Meeting, which will be held at Tsinghua University, Beijing on October 27–29, 2010.
