3. Job Description
Kyoto University invites applications for an associate professor position in the Graduate School of Letters. The successful candidate will be required to teach interfaculty courses* in English offered by the Graduate School of Letters, human sciences and social sciences (Group A) subjects in English for the Undergraduate International Course in Global Engineering, and other classes (see "Duties" below for details).
*Note: interfaculty courses are courses offered by the Graduate School of Letters which are attended by students of several different graduate schools.
The abovementioned courses are offered as part of the Kyoto University Programs for Future International Leaders (K.U. PROFILE) range of programs for international students (see below for details of the K.U. PROFILE initiative).
Duties:
- Teaching (in English) the interfaculty course "Japanese and Asian Studies in Kyoto."
- Planning and coordination of the interfaculty courses of the Graduate School of Letters.
- Teaching human sciences and social sciences (Group A) subjects in English for the Undergraduate International Course in Global Engineering.
- Teaching classes in the Kyoto University International Education Program (KUINEP) (see below for details of KUINEP).
- Planning and coordination of classes and other activities relating to K.U. PROFILE.
- Other miscellaneous tasks, classes and lectures as assigned by the university management.
K.U. PROFILE
K.U. PROFILE (Kyoto University Programs for Future International Leaders) is Kyoto University's educational initiative under the Japanese government's Global 30 (G30) Project for Establishing Core Universities for Internationalization. K.U. PROFILE aims to contribute to the G30 Project by providing degree-level courses taught entirely in English. The courses are designed to provide motivated international students with education and research experience of the highest quality and a global perspective.
The Undergraduate International Course in Global Engineering will commence in April 2011. All lectures will be provided in English. The course is a 4-year program leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering. The course also includes "Group A" subjects, which cover human sciences and social sciences.
KUINEP
KUINEP (Kyoto University International Education Program) is a university-wide international exchange program. KUINEP classes are taught in English and are offered to both international and domestic students.

4. Lecture Subjects and Major Areas of Research
Successful applicants will be required to give lectures on Japanese and Asian culture and society for international students. All classes will be conducted in English. Candidates are required to have a strong research background in sociology or related social sciences.
5. Starting Date
April 1, 2011 (may commence at an earlier date if agreed)

1-year contract to be renewed annually until March 31, 2014

Candidates must have either a Ph.D. degree or record of outstanding research achievements in a relevant academic field.

- Curriculum vitae
- Essay summarizing the candidate's educational experience and aims with regards to their career in education, including details of classes and education promotion activities that the candidate has undertaken (1200 words in English)
- List of academic publications (The list should be divided into two categories: "published books" and "academic papers")
- Summary of research experience and aims for future research (2000 Japanese characters)
- Copies of major academic publications written by the candidate (up to 5 items, photocopies acceptable)
- Evidence of English language proficiency
- Names and contact details of two referees
