Faculty Position (Associate Professor in Earth Resources Engineering), Departments of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering

The Department of Civil and Earth Resources Engineering, Kyoto University, is embarking on an ambitious multiyear period of growth and renewal. As part of this initiative, applications are being solicited for a special task faculty position for the international undergraduate and postgraduate educational programs.

The Department seeks an Associate Professor in Earth Resources Engineering who will strengthen and/or broaden these areas of expertise, and enable to teach science, mathematics and broad engineering subjects for the international course. The candidate is also required to possess effective verbal and written communication skills in English, and interpersonal relationship and research motivations. Postdoctoral experience and industrial experience in the international projects are highly desirable.

Required qualifications are that the candidates must have (i) a degree of either PhD or Doctor of Engineering in earth resources or related academic fields, (ii) ability to give classes on modeling of geology, time-series analysis, applied elasticity for rock mechanics and fundamental theories in geophysical exploration to postgraduate and applied mathematics to undergraduate students. No responsibility as a student research supervisor is to be given to this particular Associate Professor. Application should include a cover letter, CV, a concise personal statement describing the candidate's vision for education and research and potential area of collaboration within the Department, a list of academic publications including reprints of top 10 papers of those most representing your research, and two letters of recommendation referring your academic and research achievements written by your references.

The Selection Committee has been set up in the Department to evaluate all candidates, based on the documents submitted. The review of the applications will begin on August 1, 2009 and continue until the position has been filled. An interview may be scheduled, if necessary, and will be informed of to selected interviewees. Unfortunately, no traveling allowance will be provided to any of the interviewees. The job assignment starts on October 1, 2009. The successful candidate must be able to teach effectively at the undergraduate level for the international course, and develop an active and significant research programs. The final decision will be made by all faculty members in the Department based on the suggestions made by the Committee. Each candidate will be informed of the final decision pertaining to him/herself only.

The initial appointment is on a three-years' contract, which can be extended up to five years. The remuneration package is defined by the regulations of the University and is not negotiable.
