Short Leave from Japan and Re-entry
If international students temporarily leave Japan for going home or traveling other countries, even for a short period they must take the following procedures.
On Campus
- Obtain a permission from their academic advisors
- Report to their faculty/graduate offices
- Fill out the Oversea Travel Notification Form at Foreign Student Division.
At the Immigration Bureau
Students must obtain "Re-entry Permit" from the Immigration Bureau before leaving Japan. Without this, they will be asked to return Alien Registration Card at departing port. Since it may take more than a month to complete formalities for re-entry, they may not be able to return to Japan at the planned time.
The Re-entry Permit expires on the same day as the period of residence status does. Those who are planning to re-enter after the present period of stay is expired must first extend the period of stay, then apply for the Re-entry Permit.
Required Documents
- Passport
- Alien Registration Card
- Processing fee (¥3,000 for single entry; ¥6,000 for multiple)
* Additional documents may be required.
At the Port of Departure/Re-entry
Take Alien Registration Card when leaving and re-entering Japan. Immigration officers ask to present Alien Registration Card at the port of departure/re-entry.
