Part-time Job Permit

All foreign nationals must always maintain legitimate Status of Residence and may engage in only activities that are permitted within the status.

If international students wish to work part-time, they must apply for and receive permission to do so before they begin a part-time job. (Teaching and research assistant positions (TAs and RAs) under a direct contract with the university are exempt from applying for a Work Permit.) International students may not work part-time while they are on a leave of absence.

Weekly working hours must not exceed 28 hours for regular students or students working with their academic advisors, and 14 hours for auditors (8 hours a day during long vacations in either case). The job must not affect public order and morals, as the sex-related industry does, for example. Anyone working without the permit or acting against this law may be liable for punishment and deportation, and anyone who knowingly employs such a person may be treated as an accomplice.

How to Apply

Application forms and instructions can be obtained and submitted to faculty/graduate offices. The turnaround time is usually one month. To expedite the process, bring the completed documents to the International Service Office, and pick up the letter of recommendation the next business day, and bring it to the Immigration Bureau. The permit will generally be ready in about two weeks. International Service Office issues a letter of recommendation only to students with "College Student" resident status. The permit expires on the same day as the one's Status of Residence.
