Scholarships

There are a variety of scholarships available for international students wishing to study at Kyoto University, however, the selection processes are very competitive, and in most cases applications are only accepted after entrance to the university. It is generally necessary, therefore, to have sufficient financial resources prior to entering Kyoto University.

Scholarships Which May Be Applied For Prior to Entering the University

• Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarship
  【Embassy Recommendations and University Recommendations】

Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: MEXT) Scholarships are funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. There are three ways to application for such scholarships: embassy recommendations, university recommendations and domestic selection. Pre-arrival applications should be made through a Japanese embassy or consulate (embassy recommendations) or through a university in Japan (university recommendations). Most MEXT Scholarship students at Kyoto University are awarded the scholarship through embassy recommendations.

As of April 2011, research students, undergraduate students and Japanese Studies Students receive the monthly stipend listed in the following chart. In addition, MEXT Scholarship students are exempted from entrance examination, matriculation and tuition fees.

• Foreign Government Scholarship

Foreign government scholarships are a further scholarship option. As of May, 2010, there are students at Kyoto University from China, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Tunisia and Vietnam receiving such scholarships. For further information on application periods and benefits, please contact the appropriate agency in your country.

• Student Exchange Support Program (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan)

International students who are accepted by a Japanese university under a student exchange agreement between the Japanese host university and their home university abroad are eligible to apply for the Scholarship for Short-Term Study in Japan provided by the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO). The scholarship provides a monthly stipend of ￥80,000 during the period of stay in Japan.

Applications should be made via exchange program coordinator of the student's home university to Foreign Student Division of Kyoto University. Direct application from students to either Kyoto University or JASSO will not be accepted.

Privately financed international students who are currently studying at Kyoto University and who wish to apply for scholarships are recommended to refer to the following link: "Scholarships for Privately Financed International Students." Please note that a few scholarships are available for prospective students who have already passed the entrance examination and are intending to enter the university.
