Student ID
Most students receive a student ID from the faculty or graduate school that issued the acceptance letter.
Student ID for regular (= degree-seeking) students serves also as the pass to enter the Main Library and the Institute for Information Management and Communication (IIMC).It can also be used to obtaincertificates of enrollment (Jpn. & Eng.), student discount coupons for JR (gakuwarishou), and other documents through the automated document-dispensing machines located at several locations on campus. To buy a student-fare commuter pass, the student ID must be presented at the public transportation station office when applying for the pass.
Non-regular (= non degree-seeking) students including research students and exchange students need additional application for the Main Library card, which serves as the pass for the library and IIMC.In most cases, non-regular students are not eligible for student discount for transportation.
However, Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau offers a student discount pass to exchange students who request for the discount in advance through their universities. This student discount applies only to Kyoto Municipal Bus and Subway.
