KIZUNA presents kabuki music class (27 October 2016)

Published on

On 27 October, Student Lounge KIZUNA hosted a Japanese traditional kabuki music class, taught by members of Kantakeno no Kai, which offers lessons in shamisen (a three-stringed banjo-like instrument) and nagauta (songs from kabuki) at the Kyoto International Community House and other venues.

Participants first listened to well-known nagauta "Genroku Hanami Odori" performed by the instructors, and to a brief lecture on the history and structure of the shamisen. They then split into shamisen and nagauta groups, and took turns practicing the song, "Sakura Sakura".

During an interlude, a KIZUNA tutor who plays the sanshin (an Okinawan precursor to the shamisen) performed "Asadoya Yunta" and "Menso-re (Welcome)", using her own instrument, and explained the differences between shamisen and sanshin.

The participants diligently worked on "Sakura Sakura" under the instructors' guidance, asking many questions, and by the end of the practice session had learned to sing and perform the song together.

The event proved a great opportunity for all to experience a Japanese traditional performing art and to get to know each other.
