KIZUNA presents "Introduction to Japanese Traditional Dance" (29 June 2016)

Published on

On 29 June, KIZUNA hosted an introductory class in Japanese traditional dance with Ms Shisen Tatsumi from Murasaki no Kai as the instructor. KIZUNA presented a similar event in February with great success. Ms Tatsumi teaches dance at the Kyoto Prefectural International Center, Kyoto International Community House, and other universities.

Participants first changed into elaborate kimono with help from Ms Tatsumi, and picked sensu (folding fan) to use with the dance. Then they practiced the traditional Japanese songs "Sakura Sakura" and "Itako Dejima".

Break time was spent watching Ms Tatsumi and her student perform "Kuroda Bushi" (Song of Kuroda) and "Ume Nimo Haru" (Plums Blooming in Spring).

Despite its short duration, the lesson concluded with everyone having learned to dance two well-known songs.

The event also provided a great opportunity for participants to learn about a traditional performing art and to get to know other students.
