The FY2013 Kyoto University President's Award ceremony was held on 17 March to recognize the students and student organizations that contributed to redounding the University's prestige through their outstanding accomplishments in academic, extracurricular, public-service, and other activities.

The awardees commended on this occasion were seven individuals and four groups, selected out of 32 nominees.

President Hiroshi Matsumoto presented certificates and commemorative gifts to the awardees, before commenting on their achievements and great deeds. Next, the award recipients delivered presentations and speeches, which wrapped up the ceremony on a high note.

Kenta Ishimoto, a second-year student in the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science Academic achievement In a study published in SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics , Ishimoto gave the first definitive proof to Purcell's scallop theorem, which asserts that microorganisms in a Stokes flow are unable to propel themselves by reciprocal motion.
Asami Iima, a fourth-year student in the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Medicine Academic achievement Iima served as the lead author of several papers on a non-invasive diagnostic tool for breast cancer that uses diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), which was published in Radiology and other high-profile journals.
Yuko Okumura, a third-year student in the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Letters Academic achievement Okumura's innovative approach to the study of infant learning has been highly esteemed both domestically and internationally. She has also played a central role in a number of collaborative studies, including one on infants' sympathetic behavior, which has been extensively quoted in the media.
Junichi Sato, a second-year student in the Master's Program at the Graduate School of Agriculture Academic achievement Sato has delivered numerous presentations about his research on cellulose liquid crystals at academic conferences at home and abroad, including at the International Cellulose Conference (ICC) 2012, where he received the poster presentation award from the journal Biomacromolecules .
Gen Hayase, a third-year student in the Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science Academic achievement Hayase succeeded in synthesizing "Marshmallowgel", a macroporous material with great flexibility, first in the world, and published a paper on this topic in the journal Angewandte Chemie, International Edition . The material is considered to offer great potential for further development and a wide range of applications, and has been reported on in a number of distinguished science journals, including Newton.
Kyoto University Formula Project KART (Kyoto Academic Racing Team), represented by Kazuki Ohashi, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Engineering (Engineering Science) Extracurricular activity At the 2013 Student Formula Japan Competition, the team took overall victory and ranked at or near the top in a number of competition categories, as well as receiving several awards, including the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Award, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Award, and Internal Combustion Vehicle (ICV) Award.
Ryosuke Yabuuchi, a second-year student in the Master's Program at the Graduate School of Science and a member of Kyodai-Tanka Extracurricular activity Yabuuchi received the 58th Kadokawa Tanka Award.
Kyoto University Windsurfing Team, Kyoto University Sports Union, represented by Yoichiro Tanaka, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Agriculture (Forest and Biomaterials Science) Extracurricular activity The team won the 2013 Japan University Boardsailing National Competition, a first for the club.
Hiroki Yokoyama, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Engineering (Global Engineering) and a member of the Kyoto University Field and Track Club, Kyoto University Sports Union Extracurricular activity Yokoyama won The Kyoto Marathon 2014 in his first challenge.
Kyoto University Men's Lacrosse Team, Kyoto University Sports Union, represented by Mizuho Fukuda, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Integrated Human Studies Public service Led by Fukuda, three members of the Lacrosse Team performed an emergency procedure for a male teammate who had gone into cardiopulmonary arrest during a training session. Their swift and appropriate action contributed to saving the athlete's life.
Kyoto University Tohoku Fukko Shien Gakusei Volunteers (a student program dedicated to providing recovery assistance in areas affected by the East Japan Great Earthquake), represented by Yuma Tanizaki, a third-year student at the Faculty of Law Public service The program participants planned and implemented recovery assistance activities in earthquake-affected areas, with administrative support provided by the University, and established a trusting relationship with local residents. They also held several symposia and public events to help keep the memories of the disaster alive.
