The five-year master's and doctoral program at the Graduate School of Advanced Integrated Studies in Human Survivability (GSAIS, or "Shishu-Kan") includes a project-based learning (PBL) activity, where fifth-year students work on identifying a social issue, and plan and implement a project that can contribute to its solution.

Dai Yamawaki, a member of Shishu-Kan's inaugural class and third-year doctoral student at the Graduate School of Economics, organized an "International Symposium on Energy Resources and Sustainability in Russia" as his PBL project, taking place 22 October at Higashi Ichijokan. Mr Yamawaki himself took charge of all event coordination, budgeting, and equipment management as the culmination of his five years of work at Shishu-Kan, marking a milestone in connecting academic research, regional and social studies, and policymaking.
