On Wednesday 28 October, Kyoto University's Tokyo Office presented the third installment of its 19th lecture series, "Families: Where Are They Headed?", organized as part of the Tokyo de Manabu Kyoto no Chi ("Learning in Tokyo About the Latest from Kyoto") program.

The topic of the lecture, delivered by Professor Hachiro Iwai of the Graduate School of Education, was "Diminishing Japanese-ness: Life Course and Families Over the Last 40 Years".

Citing international data on birth rates and women's participation in the workforce, Professor Iwata first delineated the characteristics of the "Japanese Family". He then went on to discuss the future of families in reference to the changes that we experience in positions and roles following major life events, including school enrollment, employment, marriage, and retirement, and current social issues, such as job insecurity among young persons.

The attendees followed the lecture with rapt attention and actively participated in the subsequent Q&A session.
