A memorandum for academic cooperation and exchange was concluded between Kyoto University and King Abdulaziz University (KAU) at a signing ceremony held at Kyoto University's Clock Tower Centennial Hall on 17 September 2014.

Prior to the signing ceremony, Prof Yasushi Kosugi, dean of the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies, Dr Takehiko Yokomine, associate professor in the Graduate School of Engineering, and Dr Zensaku Kawara, senior lecturer in the Graduate School of Engineering, outlined the current status of research collaboration between the two institutions to the delegation from KAU. President Hiroshi Matsumoto then commenced the signing ceremony by welcoming the KAU delegation, and expressing his hopes for the future enhancement of research cooperation. HE Dr Osama S Tayeb, president of KAU, responded by extending his gratitude for the conclusion of memorandum and expressing his own aspirations for a deepening of collaboration. President Matsumoto and President Tayeb then proceed to sign the agreement.

The agreement with KAU is the first academic exchange agreement that Kyoto University has concluded with a university in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its conclusion is the product of a cooperative relationship built between the two institutions through Kyoto University’s participation in the International Exhibition and Conference on Higher Education (IECHE), held annually in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well as through collaborative research workshops held by the two universities since 2012.

The conclusion of the university-level memorandum for academic cooperation and exchange is anticipated to significantly advance collaboration between the two institutions, including accelerating existing and new joint research projects and facilitating the exchange of students and young researchers.
