Faculty development symposium addresses re-inventing Japanese universities (6 March 2017)

Published on

On 6 March, the first faculty development symposium for the "Re-Inventing Japanese University Project: International Program on Resilient Society Development under Changing Climate (RSDC)" was held at Hotel Centnovum Kyoto.

The Re-Inventing Japanese University Project provides financial support for programs aiming to attract and accept international students, as well as for promoting collaborative education exchange among students in Japan, China, Korea, the United States, and other countries. It also strives to enhance the influence of Japanese universities and the quality of higher education through an international framework -- involving Asia, the United States, and other regions -- with the goal of developing talented individuals capable of succeeding in a global society.

The symposium opened with remarks by Professor Hiroyasu Ohtsu, project leader and vice-dean of the Graduate School of Engineering, followed by a speech from honorary guest Professor Masao Kitano, executive vice-president for education, information infrastructure, and evaluation at Kyoto University.

Overviews of RSDC were then presented by Professors Junji Kiyono (Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies, GSGES), Tomoharu Hori (Disaster Prevention Research Institute), and Yausuto Tachikawa and Tomomi Yagi (Graduate School of Engineering), and Associate Professor Izuru Saizen (GSGES). These were followed by a panel discussion.

60 people, including guests, attended from 15 RSDC partner universities in seven countries, resulting in a highly productive symposium that generated a dynamic exchange of ideas on international education. Concluding remarks were delivered by Professor Mariko Mori, director of the Kyoto University International Education Administration Office.
