Recent psychological research from the UK and North America suggests that shame and guilt can play a significant role in shaping community responses to calls for environmental action.
Environmental scientists, on the other hand, have rarely addressed public involvement, limiting themselves instead to discussing rules, values, and what "should" be done; their arguments assume "rational individuals", and largely ignore other motivations as well as the entire community and its collective responsibility.
In the 38th Kokoro Seminar, Associate Professor Sarah E Fredericks of the University of Chicago explores collective shame and guilt, and suggests how moral emotions can drive community action to tackle global warming and other environmental challenges.
