On 14 May, the Kyoto University Institute of Advanced Energy (IAE) marked its 20th anniversary with a special program comprised of lectures, a ceremony, and a reception, all of which took place at Obaku Plaza on the Uji Campus.

With around 140 in attendance, the lectures were delivered by Mr Yoshihiro Doi, Managing Executive Officer and Director of the Kansai Electric Power Co Inc (KEPCO), and Professor Masao Kitano, Kyoto University's Executive Vice-President for Education, Information Infrastructure, and Evaluation. These were entitled, respectively, "Electricity and Energy Situations Today and the Efforts to be Made" and "Maxwell's Equations: 150 Years of History and Ongoing Relevance".

The ceremony commenced with an address by IAE Director Tohru Mizuuchi, followed by congratulatory remarks by KU President Juichi Yamagiwa; Dr Hiroshi Ikukawa, Deputy Director-General, Research Promotion Bureau, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT); Professor Masahiro Shioji, Dean of the KU Graduate School of Energy Science (GSES); and Professor Yuji Hiraki of the KU Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences, who also heads the Council of Joint Usage/Research Centers.

At the reception, four guests offered their congratulations and expressed their expectations for what IAE can contribute to energy research and education over the coming years. These were: KU Professor Emeritus Yoshikazu Nishikawa, Director Takashi Watanabe of the KU Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), Professor Dou Peng of Chongqing University, and Program-Specific Assistant Professor Reiko Sakaguchi of the KU Institute for Integrated Cell Material Sciences (iCeMS). Professor Emeritus Kiyoshi Yoshikawa then gave a toast, and attendees engaged in casual conversation, many reflecting on IAE's two decades of activities.
